CHINA: 3-YEAR OLD BOY RESCUED AFTER SPENDING 8 DAYS AT BOTTOM OF WELL Shenyang| A 3-year old boy who had been reported missing last week, was finally rescued this morning after spending 8 days and 7 nights at the bottom of an 18-metre deep well. The youngster, named Wong Jiang, had accidentally fallen into the dry well after playing with his mother in a street in China’s northeastern Liaoning Province. Exploring an old alley near his parents’ house, the young man fell into a 50 centimeters wide well, finding himself caught underground in a dark, confined and damp environment. His parents and relatives searched the neighborhood but were unable to find him, so they alerted the police. After a week of research which had led to many theories being elaborated, he was finally found in the well last night by a group of volunteers participating in the rescue efforts. The boy was visibly terrified and weakened, and remained inaccessible at the bottom of a narrow and obstructed hole. Soldiers were rapidly mobilized on the site, working overnight on removing obstacles so they could reach the boy. The slimmest soldier of the unit was nominated in the morning to climb down the well, descending with much difficulty. When the soldier finally reached the bottom of the 18-metre well, the youngster was so scared that he refused to be taken back to the surface by the rescuer. He only calmed down enough to be lifted to safety after being spoken to by his mother. After almost an hour of slow and strenuous progress, they were finally able to bring the boy back to his mother, bringing cheers from the crowd. The youngster, who had been exceptionally calm and silent during the long ascent, became very emotional once he saw his mother. The well should also be blocked and filled by the city over the next weeks to avoid any further similar incident.
