CHINA BUILDS HIGHEST AIRPORT Good morning! Once again the Chinese are ahead of us and onto something. They’ve built the world’s highest airport in Tibet. Its 14,472 high. That’s 9 feet taller than Mt. Rainer! Before landing, stewardesses warn you about altitude sickness (I had a mild dose of it when I was there—just trouble sleeping). The Chinese are conquering Tibet thru trade, tourism & cultural contact, not the gun. What was 2 days by bus to Chengdu is now an hour by mountain jet. This was the idea when they built the train up into the Himalayas to Lhasa, Tibet in 2006. I was in Tibet just before then and remember the controversy: is the train cultural imperialism or economic boom? But the Chinese nailed it with this airport! Don’t conquer Tibet with the power of the military, but with the power of people, that is trade, tourism and cultural contact & exchange. I wish the US would learn from China on this.
