CHINA FACTS: Did you know that the Chinese word for America literally means beautiful country? There are 3.6 million Chinese-Americans living in the USA. There isnt one American-Chinese living in China. In fact, being American is simply living in the USA. Being Chinese is something that you are by race/ethnicity. A Chinese person can always become an American based upon residency. An American can never become Chinese no matter how long they live here. Nonetheless, there are about 71,500 Americans living in China out of the 600,000 foreigners who live here. Americans are number 2 in the foreigner population in China. South Korea is number one. Almost two-thirds of the foreigners in mainland China live in only 4 cities. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing. Where I live, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, out of a metro population of perhaps 12 million people, there are about 2,000 foreigners registered here. Of those, less 700 of them are teachers. In Beijing, with a population of 20-22 million, census estimates show that there are about 107,000 foreigners there. Of those, between 15 and 20 thousand are teachers. I get stared at more than George Clooney would at a Lakers game. If a person is self-conscious about being stared at, they dont need to come here. It bothered me a little when I first came here but I quickly got accustomed to it. Now, I just say smile and say hello a lot. (Note: Teachers can come from any English speaking country; i.e. USA, U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa as well as non-English speaking countries where English is widely spoken.)
