CHINA INTENSIFIES SUPPORT TO FIGHT EBOLA - PROVIDES OVER $1.8 MILLION US DOLLAR DONATED ITEMS Freetown, Jan. 9, 015 (MOHS) - The People’s Republic of China has heightened its continued support to contain the Ebola virus disease in Sierra Leone with more medical equipment, vehicles and motor bikes to the government. Making the donation of 200 motor bikes and 15 pick-up trucks worth 1 Million U.S. Dollars, medical equipment estimated at $354,000 and $500,000 cash donation that will be remitted to a designated Bank Account by the government, the Chinese Ambassador, Zhao Yanbo described the gesture as an additional support in the fight against the Ebola virus, and assured the government of more assistance. He expressed the hope that the donation would help intensify social mobilization, surveillance, and to compliment government’s efforts in the payment of workers risk allowances. The Envoy said he is aware of the constraints with medical equipment, hoping that the 215 sets of medical items would go a long way in addressing some of the gaps. China, Ambassador Yanbo said, appreciates the cordial bilateral relationship between the two countries and reiterated his government’s commitment to give full support to end the pandemic. He said with the enthusiasm and hard work seen by Sierra Leoneans, he is optimistic of victory at the end of the tunnel. Responding, Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Abu Bakarr Fofanah described the day as another historic milestone in the long standing relationship between Sierra Leone and China. He noted the level of cooperation, trust and respect, and the traditional bilateral culture between the two countries. Dr. Fofanah told his audience that China was the first country to respond to the clarion call of President Koroma for international support, and continues to expand its assistance to the government and people of Sierra Leone. He disclosed the shipment of more support including ambulances and other essential items from the Chinese Government, and extends gratitude to his colleague in the Foreign Ministry, Dr. Samura Kamara for his pivotal role between the two countries.
