CHOICES AND PLAY: FRIDAY, 9:43 am. Children in a play-based school have expansive time for choosing where, what and with whom to play. Below are 4 different play choices that were occurring simultaneously across two classrooms both inside and outside. Consider: what if any of these children were asked to follow a teacher agenda instead of following their own agenda? These are the types of experiences that would likely not have occurred if children were not encouraged to be the agents of their own learning: 1. WATER SYSTEM. One 3yo girl explores the mechanics of the water pipe system in an outdoor area. She continued to turn the water on and off to seemingly test the amount of water that came out and her ability to control it. There were a number of children working alongside the girl. 2. TWIG COLORED BLOCKS. One 4yo boy worked independently with a large basket of twig blocks to create with and manipulate these open-ended blocks. Stacking, sizing, balancing are three possible focuses here. 3. SLIDE MADE OF HOLLOW BLOCKS. Group designed and tested. One girl climbed the steps in front of the constructed slide and made her way down. Beyond the slide, there is a smaller, lower slide the children also created. The children had formed a line to go on their own slide and then would hurry back around to get on line again. 4. CAN YOU FIND THE A ? One 4 year old girl worked with pencil to hide letters in her drawing and would turn to other children at the table and pose her question to them. The children would immediately stop their work to search for the letter in question. This game went on for at least 10 minutes as the drawing become more complicated and full of hidden of letters.
