CHRISTIAN RECOVERY NUGGETS: Praying only for knowledge of God’s will for us and the power to carry it out helps us set aside our self-serving motives and interact well with others. We receive the reassurance of God’s presence and the knowledge that his will is for us to be restored to health. Scripture gives examples of how we might behave when we allow God’s will to work through us. In Luke 6:35-38, we are told: “Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them…be merciful…do not judge…do not condemn…forgive…give” When we follow Christ’s teachings and observe God’s will for our lives, we experience peace and serenity. “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart..For out of the outflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45. The goal of each of the steps is to improve our knowledge of God and our basic goodness and value as part of his creation. “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins. Mark 11:24. Our belief in God and the use of prayer are the principal tools that enable the Twelve Steps to support our recovery. Spending time in meditation enables us to become better acquainted with God in the same way that we become acquainted with someone we would really like to know. Meditation can be difficult and may feel uncomfortable with sitting still and calming our busy thoughts. We may feel we are wasting time, instead of doing something productive.
