CHRISTMAS COOKIE COUNTDOWN: JEWEL BARS - #15 From Rhonda Margaf - The Pines Christian Church 3/4 cup butter, softened 3/4 cup brown sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 2 cups flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt 1-1/3 cups flaked coconut 1 cup mixed candied fruit (12 oz.) 3/4 cup chopped walnut or pecans 1-14 oz. can condensed milk Cream together butter, brown sugar and vanilla. Mix flour, baking powder and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Mix well by hand. Press smoothly and evenly into 11x15 inch baking pan. Bake @ 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until firm and lightly browned. Layer coconut, candied fruit and nuts evenly over crust. Drizzle condensed milk evenly over ingredients (avoid drizzling milk heavily along edges because it may over-brown.) Put back in oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool in pan on wire rack, then cut in 50 bars with buttered knife. Store airtight when cool. ORANGE COOKIES - #14 From Thelma Tingley - a faithful saint that passed in 1975 - McElroy Church of Christ Cream together: 1 cup butter 2 cups sugar 2 eggs Add: 1 whole orange (grind whole orange w/ peeling & add juice.) 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk 6 cups flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda Blend well. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto lightly sprayed baking sheet. Bake @ 350 degrees for 9 minutes. Remove from tray, cool & frost. Frosting: 1 whole orange (grind whole orange w/ peeling & add juice.) 1# powdered sugar 4 Tbsp. softened butter May need a little more powdered sugar or just a few drops of milk to get right consistency. Beat well. Makes about 6 dozen.
