***CHRISTMAS DAY DINNER 2014*** EVEN Charles Dickens Scrooge could not have failed to be touched by the scene that greeted visitors at the Kilmegan Centre in Castlewellan last Christmas Day. Dozens of people gathered together to enjoy a free traditional festive dinner at a special holiday feast held for the community. Last years event was a huge success with over a hundred Christmas meals served with the help of volunteers and local business sponsors who supplied the familiar seasonal ingredients. Now the organisers behind the event, PIPS (Public Initiative for the Prevention of Suicide) and MYMY (Mind Your Mate and Yourself) are gearing up to host the feast again for 2014. To that end PIPS/MYMY are appealing to volunteers to assist in plating up meals and helping the feast run smoothly. Roseleen McCann, who founded MYMY with her brother, Ray Cunningham, said last years inaugural event had a real feel-good factor. Afterwards we got messages from people who were there and they said they hadnt had a day like it in their lives, said Roseleen. Everyone had a good time. There was a real feel-good factor at it. For the people who were there, it really did bring to them a sense of goodwill. Felix Blaney, who helped cook the Christmas meal, said those who would be planning to come along this festive season would enjoy good craic, a fantastic time and have a full belly by the end of the afternoon. News of the feast had even reached Lapland, and Santa Claus took time out of his busy schedule to bring his jolly cheer to the feast. And Santa will be back, he teased. Ray said he was confident their volunteer appeal would be met by a great response. Its a great community event and the same team who were involved last year will be again. All the services and food is free of charge and local radio presenter, Paul McKenna, will be there providing the music and there will also be a raffle, explained Ray. The dinner, which will be held between 12 noon and 3pm on 25 December, is free-of-charge, although donations are welcome, and any funds raised will go to PIPS. A volunteer information evening will be held next month on 10 November at 7.30pm. In the meantime, anyone who would like more information can contact Tara at PIPS/MYMY on (028) 4372 7549 or get in touch via the mindyourmateoryourelf@gmail e-mail address.
