CITV News 13/5/14: DEEP SEA MINING WORKSHOP - Opening Address - During the opening address by Minister Brown at the DSM workshop this morning, he said the process of issuing exploratory licences will commence in next 12 months. The Cook Islands have also filed an application with the International Seabed Authority for an area of the Clarion Clipperton zone (NE of Hawaii) which will be heard by the ISA in 2 months time. [Honestly, though I thought this was done already some years ago, I remember we missed the deadline one year - slackers we are!]. [FYI the Clarion Clipperton zone is international waters, its not in our EEZ, but since it borders us, we can apply for a piece of it, and actually we probably should begin our mining there, huh! what do you think - be like the Japanese, preserve our own resources and use others]. - The pics below are borrowed from our Seabed Authoritys website so you can see the exploratory and extraction phases.
