CITY ASKING RESIDENTS TO “BE WATER WISE” THIS SUMMER With summer coming, the City of Saskatoon is reminding residents to keep basic water conservation tips in mind when watering lawns and gardens. From June to August, residents will hear, see and learn about water conservation through radio and newspaper advertising, conservation displays and information at shopping malls, and social media messages. The water conservation tips are part of “Be Water Wise,” a campaign designed to reduce peak water use during the summer months, reduce the quantity of storm water run-off that goes into the river, and reduce energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with high water use. The 2013 campaign will focus on increasing awareness of water usage among residents and motivating them to reduce peak water by providing tips on outdoor water use during the summer. Brenda Wallace, Environmental Services Branch Manager, says the focus on outdoor water use by residents is based on the fact that in Saskatoon, water use peaks in the summer. “Water use by residents makes up over half (57%) of the total demand for water in Saskatoon,” says Wallace. “In fact, in 2012, Saskatoon residents consumed 230 litres of water per capita per day, while the median water use for Canadian municipalities is 211 LCD.” While the treatment and distribution capacity of Saskatoon’s water system is more than adequate for an average day, Wallace says seasonal peaks in water use can put the system close to its maximum capacity, and that’s something the City wants to avoid. “During periods of high water demand, the treatment plants and distribution systems are in high use so conserving water will extend the life of our Water Treatment Plant and delay the need to build new infrastructure as the city grows. Another benefit of water conservation is a greener environment as the energy required to treat and distribute drinking water is associated with a significant amount of greenhouse gas (GHG)...
