CITY COMPOST POPULAR WITH RESIDENTS! Over 200 bags of compost and mulch were purchased by city residents over the weekend at the first of three City Compost Sales this summer. That’s over 5,000 litres or 5 cubic metres of material! The City of Saskatoon Environmental Services Branch has been accepting leaves, grass, non-elm tree and shrub branches, and garden waste since 2006. Until now, the compost has been used mainly in City parks and gardens. For the first time, compost is being sold to residents as part of a pilot project. If effective, the sales could expand next year to include commercial customers. “Residents seemed really eager to purchase the compost, with some people lined up on Saturday morning before the sale started,” said Ian Loughran, spokesperson from Environmental Services. “There’s still a lot of beautiful and nutrient-rich compost and mulch available to help make yards and gardens healthy, so we’re encouraging residents to come out and pick up a bag a two.” Compost sale dates are: August 17/18, and September 7/8 from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Highway 7 Compost Depot, just off Highway 7 on the west side of the 11th Street junction. The cost of the compost and mulch is $5 per 20 litre bag (5 gallons). Residents can pick up a compostable bag or bring their own similar sized container (e.g. 5 gallon pail) for filling. Staff will be available to fill containers, collect fees, and assist with loading. Residents may purchase up to 10 bags of compost and mulch each.
