CITY EXPANDING RED-LIGHT SAFETY CAMERA PROGRAM The City of Saskatoon is continuing its driver education approach to improve safety on Saskatoon streets. Over the next few weeks, the City of Saskatoon will be installing a new red light camera at the intersection of 33rd Street and Idylwyld Drive and replacing existing cameras at three other locations. “Drivers who run red lights at signalized intersections run the risk of causing collisions especially right- angle and left turn opposite collisions which are often more severe and can result in serious injury or death,” says Transportation Manager Angela Gardiner. “Red light-runners put their lives and the safety of others at risk.” Once the new red light camera is installed at 33rd Street and Idylwyld Drive, violation warnings will be mailed out to the registered owner of vehicles that violates the red light in the first month only. At the conclusion of the warning phase, drivers who disregard the traffic signal will receive a violation and an order to pay a fine. Red-light safety cameras are located at the following intersections: · Preston Avenue and 8th Street · Warman Road and 51st Street · Avenue C and Circle Drive · NEW INTERSECTION: 33rd Street and Idylwyld Drive Cameras operate 24 hours a day and capture still images and video of vehicles when they run a red light at an intersection. All violations are issued after Saskatoon Police Service officers review the photographic and video evidence. Signs posted along the street will alert drivers that red-light safety cameras are in use at the intersection ahead. “Since its inception in the City of Saskatoon, the red light camera program has helped to reduce the number of severe collisions and fatalities at the locations where the cameras are installed,” says Gardiner. “A recent review of the red light camera program shows an average of 15 per cent reduction in injury and fatality rate at red light camera locations.” The review also shows a significant reduction of 22 per cent in the most severe type of collisions as compare with other busy intersections in the City. Along with improved safety on the streets, red-light cameras contribute other benefits to communities. A portion of the fines collected for these violations is used to improve safety at other intersections in Saskatoon. The City of Saskatoon is committed to traffic safety and the overall goal of the red light camera enforcement program is to reduce collisions and achieve zero infractions. To further inform the public about the program, the City of Saskatoon has information at saskatoon.ca under “R” for Red Light Camera. A video explaining how red-light safety cameras and the violation process works will be available soon.
