CITY OF LAS VEGAS SPONSORS PARK(ING) DAY SEPT. 19 Effort Designed To Create Temporary Public Spaces The city of Las Vegas and its Parking Services Division is sponsoring PARK(ing) Day this year as a way to build community in the downtown area. The city will utilize 25 metered spaces on the 100 block of Sixth and Seventh streets and allow citizens to temporarily transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks on Friday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no cost to participate, but an application and site plan must be submitted to the city for review and approval by Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. Visit the city’s website to download the application. PARK(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals (operating independently of Rebar but following an established set of guidelines) creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world.
