CLARION CALL: IS THIS CAUSE STILL JUST? IRIAEVHO PRECIOUS {Secretary- General, SUG, UNIBEN} HELP ME GOD! I wanted to remain silent, but it is not golden anymore. I am ashamed of what have become to the union that which I belong to, and I hereby state that there is nothing honorable about the actions that we all have partook in. I hereby state that I don’t want to be referred to as HONOURABLE, call ME IRIAEVHO PRECIOUS simply, till my actions become honorable. I also hereby want to use this medium to open up to all the university of Benin students by whose respective mandate, I have become what I am today and whatever I will be tomorrow, I still owe to them. Anyone can say anything to me, anyone can choose to attack me physically, you will only hurt me or kill me, but the truth will prevail. We had plans for a dream union but it hurts to realize that some individuals have sold their right and conscience to act against the ethics and oath of office which guide them. ON THE PRESS TALK BY THE PRESIDENT This is to serve as an express disclaimer that MR. IFIDON IKHIDE JOHN, acted on his own volition without the backing, blessing and consent of other members of the executives and I also believe without reasonable consultation with school management. Which directly means he did not act as A PRESIDENT of the students and for the union executives. If you watched it, you will notice the conspicuous absence of majority of the EXCOS, it was deliberate and the simple truth is that we are against him and his actions from hence, which he is very much aware off, so it baffles me why he still went ahead with the telecast. The alleged press conference does not seek the interest of the university nor the students, but it reeks of malicious and selfish intent and it can be deduced by the derogative statements directed to the incumbent governor of Edo state. It is obvious he is acting a script to self-destruct, because whoever is misleading him does not wish him well. We are intellectuals and it hurts that he can still go ahead with such folly even when the government has agreed to meet with the aggrieved lecturers {ASUU IS MEETING THE GOVERNOR TOMORROW, MONDAY.} to apologize and soothe them and also find possible relief on an equal landing ground, this same governor has also agreed to meet the union executives to settle this issue amicably and forge ahead unto bigger things for the students and state in general. ON THE ALLEGED PROTEST The alleged protest can never hold in this university as it borders on our morality and integrity, which seem to have gone to the dogs. And if it holds, students are advised to desist from partaking as the protest has been hijacked, the purpose polluted and unwanted elements from the society will be leading the front- line. I hereby advice all good intentioned students to steer clear of the vicinity as they celebrate in there gross and magnanimous stupidity. This hired criminals and hoodlums may engage the police, because this protest is not legal and the police may be forced to take up arms to call for order by duress. And we call on all well-meaning university of Benin students to shun this protest and quench it, as the protest is now been motivated and funded by some partisan element and it is no longer for the cause of the lecturers which made us concede to it at first. It hurts that students are now been used as political thugs and we cannot differentiate between a student and a thug anymore, this has even escalated and aggravated the duties of the university security department, because as it stands, miscreants now have a stronger hold on our dear institution. Criminal activities have taken an increased growth with an all time high just because the union has lost its purpose. We have a new vice-chancellor, and it hurts that by our inglorious actions, the university might become ungovernable or him soon, because the union is supposed to protect the students but otherwise is the case, I will not be surprised at a student revolt, but I apologize to the students that there are still good and edible apples in the union executive. When we began, our intentions were pure, but since the president has allowed himself to get carried away with the euphoria of the present misdemeanors he is drunken on, all we can do is to leave him to rock his boat and face the result of his actions, positive or negative. My reasons are not far-fetched, students have been complaining that we have taken an overdose of “paracetamol” on another man’s headache but we pushed on while letting there general welfare to suffer, but now we have chosen to listen to them, because they are supposed to be our priority and they were not wrong in the first place. Your cries has risen to us, and we are taking the better alternative of non-violence which tends to yield more results without collateral damage. We are supposed to be looking for avenue to make our students happy and not be proud to go on air and start advocating for civil disobedience and whatever he was talking about, it hurt to see the union showing a heightened sense of cluelessness, to what end? ARE THE STUDENTS ALONE? A big NO! YOU have the backing of the almighty GOD, eight {8} other executive {no particular order}, who still know there purpose and have not sold out there mandate to defend the students: V.PRESIDENT. SECRETARY-GENERAL. ATTORNEY GENERAL. ASS. SECRETARY GENERAL DIRECTOR OF FINANCE. DIRECTOR OF WELFARE. DIRECTOR OF SPORTS. DIRECTOR OF SOCIALS. And the entire populace of the university of Benin students who have lost faith long ago in what the union now stands for, but still believe that change and good is imminent. We are supposed to be helping the fresh student in getting acquainted to the university and in providing conducive clearance atmosphere, creating provision for student who are resuming who are not been allowed into the hall of residence and other arising issues and not blocking the main road like the ever popular “AGBERO” IN Lagos state. THE WAY FORWARD We have taken a resolve to kick against the protest with serious backlash and we also expressly dissociate ourselves from any impending action if it does not spell well for the university students who are our main priority. We are not in support and God will empower us to do the right things. Any subsequent misdemeanor will see them dancing to their own beat as it is not done under the umbrella of the STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT, so we tell the students to be at ease and let the president continue to lead the P.R.O, his kitchen cabinet and clueless loyalists to a lost battle. The government want dialogue, and we are setting up structures in place to sit with him, discuss and shelf this issue, once and for all. And since the government also wants to meet the lecturers, you might ask that what is the new aim of the protest, I guess IFIDON knows better. ASK HIM! Please your contributions will be needed and what steps do you think we all can take, to create a model UNIBEN, that will perpetually remain at the zenith with continued positive remarks and legacies oriented from and directed to the entire student community. NB: Insults and criticisms will be highly tolerated, I think I deserve more of those than ever. ALSO, Anyone can say anything to me, anyone can choose to attack me physically, you will only hurt me or kill me, but the truth will prevail. I AM SO SORRY THAT I FAILED THE ENTIRE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO WENT AGAINST ALL ODDS TO VOTE FOR ME. WE CAN STILL DO IT. ITS NOT JUST ABOUT SAYING YES WE CAN, ITS ALSO ABOUT DOING ALL WE CAN CHANGE IS POSSIBLE, LETS UNITE AGAIN AND FORGE AHEAD.
