CLARKE TIRED OF WADDELL Reuben, the Eccentric, a Thorn in the Pittsburg Manager’s Flesh Pittsburg, Pa., July 20 [1900] – The Pittsburg club has made arrangements to dispose of “Rube” Waddell, or rather has consented that outside managers be given a chance to land him. The eccentric pitcher has blocked the first move in this direction. This afternoon Waddell, while pitching for Punxsutawney, Pa., was handed a telegram from Cornelius McGillicuddy, otherwise known as Connie Mack, now manager and part owner of the Milwaukee club of the American League. Mack offered Waddell $250 per month and all expenses to finish the season with Milwaukee. Rube, standing in front of the grand stand, tore the message to atoms and said to the messenger: “Tell Mr. Mack, and sign my name, that Eddie Waddell likes Punxsutawney, and he will stick here for the rest of the year, if he has to pay his own expenses and don’t get a cent in salary.” There is not a little amusement manifested among the cranks in Pittsburg to-night over the wrong working of the new club rules sprung by Manager Fred Clarke when the team reached Philadelphia yesterday. Clarke rounded his men up and told them they must cut out even shopping expeditions during the present trip. No social engagements went. The club has lost the only two games played under the new rules and the fans are to-night seriously considering the advisability of sending Clarke a suggestion to place booze on the free list and schedule nightly jaunts if it will make the club win games.
