CLASS Dear Colleague, The national organisation, Class (Centre for Labour and Social Studies) will be holding its first regional launch in Leeds on the evening of 13 June 2013. Class, a new think tank rooted in the experiences of working people, was set up last year by GMB and Unite the Union and now has the backing of nine of Britain’s biggest trade unions. In the short time since it was launched Class has had a significant impact within the trade union movement, the media and the political arena – evidence of the growing appetite for the alternative political direction Class is putting forward. Through the production of pamphlets, publications and events Class provides the evidence and research the movement needs to support our case for a fairer society. They have produced important work looking at the issues of: inequality and why it matters, what the welfare state should look like, how we can tackle the housing crisis and plans for jobs and growth in the economy. Our union has been supporting this important initiative from the very beginning and we urge you to get involved. Unlike most think tanks Class recognises the importance of ensuring the voice of working people from across the UK is heard by policy makers and so they will be holding a series of regional launches. The first will be held in Leeds at the Unite offices, 55 Call Lane, Leeds, LS1 7BW from 6:30pm – 8:30pm on Thursday 13 June. Speakers will explain what Class is, how Class is getting the issues that are important to working people on the political agenda and why this is such a crucial time for intervention. Speakers include:- • Colin Burgon – former Labour MP for Elmet • Professor Danny Dorling – University of Sheffield • Veronica King – Class and Unite activist • Karen Reay – North East and Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Secretary of Unite the Union • Tim Roache – Yorkshire and North Derbyshire Regional Secretary of the GMB, elected Chair of Yorkshire and the Humber Regional TUC and elected President of Class That is where you come in. I would like as many of you as possible please to come along to this Leeds launch event, to learn more about Class, get involved and have your say on how you think the work of this organisation could assist you and our members. Drinks and refreshments will be available at the event, as will copies of Class’s publications, including Danny Dorling’s paper In Place of Fear: Narrowing Health Inequalities and the welfare mythbuster Exposing the Myths of Welfare. I hope to see you there. Many thanks
