CLASS WORK TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Politics is concerned with how policies and laws are formulated, executed and Implemented. In addition, central to political activities is the allocation of values. This is why politics is basically concerned with the allocation of values, resources to members of the society. Political Monopoly is a situation in which an individual occupied the political landscape of a society. Indeed, this has a far-reaching negative effect to a body polity. These effects include; poor governance, severance of relationships between the rule and the ruled, it dissuade accountability and suppress responsibility and transparency. It is in fact inimical to democratic tenets. The experience from our Senatorial District is not far-fetched from the aforementioned attributes, due to the unending power monopoly that is evident in the district. Therefore competition becomes paramount to alleviate the above mentioned political impunities. It is important to note that competition is an element of politics. This is because competition for political power among individuals and groups aimed at controlling and distributing scarce resources, most often, enhance accountability and accountability to the electorates. However, to many, the interplay of politics and competition in Nigeria is worrisome. They believe political competition for the control of the state and its political power is now a bloody warfare as the state holds the key to wealth. They see it as an act or a phenomenon to sabotage the effort of the men in power. It is important to note that Alago Nation is not the only society suffused with political competition; in fact, political competition has been humanity’s unending affliction to democracy. An ideal political democracy is defined as: an institutional arrangement for arriving at political decisions in which individuals endeavor to acquire political office through perfectly free competition for the votes of a broadly based electorate. Put it more bluntly that as long as people and nations pursue different and conflicting interests, there will always be competition. This is also political because politics denotes competition for political authority and the control of scarce resources which necessarily generates accountability and transparency; it discourages political monopoly and indeed is serves as basis of any democratic culture. Competition among political candidates is an important, if not the most critical determinant of democracy. Free, fair, and competitive elections are seen the minimal precondition in order for a country to be a democracy. Scholars consider political competition in at least two different ways: On one hand, it is viewed as the mechanism that ensures responsiveness and accountability. On the other hand, it is seen as the pivotal characteristic of control by the people. In representative democracies, vertical control is exercised by means of elections. However, effective elections must be competitive and only competition ensures a real choice and induces the candidates to act responsively; Only when there are several individuals or parties that are forced to compete for political power in elections, and only when there is a chance to win and lose elections, individuals or parties have to deliver on their promises. In conclusion, there are empirical evidence for the positive impact of competition on different political and social outcomes, such as better representation, improved economic performance, less corruption, a higher quality of governance, or even stability in new democracies. Furthermore, competition seems to have a positive effect on voter turnout. No be only me waka come woh!
