CLASSES FOR THE WEEK OF June 17th Visiting Artists Melanie Tucker: Greenville, MS, received her BFA in Commercial Art at the Mississippi University for Women, and is a member of the MS Art Education Association. Her preferred media are printmaking, papermaking, book arts, and figure studies. She is married to Craig, a fisheries biologist whose love of all-things-fish has rubbed off on his wife despite her revulsion to any food item that can swim, slither, or shed its scaly skin. Lilly Iris Mitchell: She received her degree in education at Delta State University. Iris has taught art students from ages 4 to 84. Her preferred media include watercolor and pastel. In 2002 she received the Creativity Award for the Northern Region of Mississippi, and in 2004, the Art in Education Award from the Greenville Arts Council at their annual Greenville Honors Its Own event. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Greenville Arts Council and is a charter member of Delta Artists Association. Lou Anne Lamar: She lives in Greenville, MS, and is the former owner of Beaucoup Sewing. She is in great demand as the one who can sew anything, and smock everything else. She is a quilter, heirloom sewer, and renowned fabric artist. Martha Weissinger: She is a native of Greenville, MS. She graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, with a Bachelor of Arts degree and from Delta State University in Cleveland, MS. with a Masters in Education. In addition, she studied at The John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Martha has been smocking for thirty years, and enjoys sharing her love of smocking. Her other hobbies include origami, judging horticulture, French hand sewing, and soap making. Atcha Turner: Atcha is originally from Thailand, and loves sharing her culture through food and art. In addition to being a renowned chef, she is a professional potter. We are honored to welcome her this week teaching clay masks! Mary Swezey: She is a professional textile artist. She has a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in Fiber Arts from Arizona State University. She lives in Richmond, VA, where she teaches classes and workshops for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Craft and Pottery Classes Smocked Baby Bishop: Learn to smock a bishop dress or bubble without a smocking board! Martha Weissinger, a seasoned smocker, teaches smocking without using a cumbersome smocking board.. M-Th 9:30-11:30, $30 Christening Caps and Church Dolls! Join Lou Anne Lamar in the sewing room items to make babies smile at every turn! The church doll is a cute quick pocket-size doll made from a hankie. The christening cap is a smocked bonnet with ribbons and lace! M-Th 2-4:30, $30 Gyotakyu Printing: Gyotaku (Japanese, from gyo “fish” + taku “rubbing”) is the traditional method of Japanese fish printing, dating from the mid-1800s. M or T, 2-4:30PM, $20 Chrismons: Join Susan Haws during family night, downstairs, to create traditional Christmas ornaments. M, 6:30-8:30PM. $3 per ornament. Clay Lithography: Using clay as a matrix, students will create a design with texture onto a rolled slab of clay. Students may incise, paint, wipe away, alter, and further embellish the inked surface before pulling a single unique print. M or T, 2-4PM, $20 Knitting on the Porch: Join Kay Clegg, Lisa Galloway, and the Montreat kitting circle on the downstairs porch of the Craft Center. Bring your knitting or purchase our supplies. If full knitting instructions needed, $8 Free.T, 2-4PM. Age limit is 8 yrs and up. Silk Painting: Draw with a liquid resist to create designs and patterns on silk scarves. Once the resist has dried and set with an iron, fabric paints are applied to complete the design. Students can expect to finish a long scarf. Mary Swezey. W and Th 2-4:30, $20 Metal Tooling: In the ancient tradition of repousse and Mexican folk craft beautiful metal crosses and metal-tooled framed mirrors using stylus, pencils and simple wood tools, antiquing our final work with black India ink. Mary Ann Athens, T or W 2-4:30, $20 Map Crafts: Using maps we’ll create simple small monotype prints on paper. These will be embellished with paint and finished for use as wall hangings. We will reuse map scraps to create hanging ornaments and experiment with staining fabric with tea to create maplines on fabric. Mary Swezy. M and T 2-4:30, $20 Origami Nativity: In one sitting, you can make an entire nativity scene from paper. It’s fun, creative and relaxing! You can even recycle old wrapping paper and grocery bags in this project. Martha Weissinger will show you how to fold the figures for your set. W, 2-4, $10 Tissue Paper Painting: Using paintbrushes, tissue paper and glue, create a beautiful landscape, figure, or still life with Iris Mitchell. All materials will be provided. Great for youth groups! W, 2-4:30PM, $15 Painted Floor Cloths: Kay Clegg and Lisa Galloway use 18” x 24” vinyl flooring to create colorful floor cloths. These last forever and work wonderfully in your kitchen or under the dog’s bowl! W & Th 2-4:30. $20 Exploding Boxes: describe boxes that have been cunningly created so that the sides cascade outwards as the lid is removed. This gives all sorts of scope for creative ideas, for instance adding rubber stamped tags with a special prayer, attaching decorative embellishments, adding keepsakes or mementos, journaling, and much more! Th 2-4:30PM, $20 Life Drawing: Hannah Garrity, our Liturgical Artist for the summer, teaches drawing from life using pencil and charcoal. All supplies provided. Th, 2-4:30, $10 Copper Enameling Jewelry: Join us for a terrific time making copper enamel jewelry. Earring backings provided. This class is priced by the piece. Join certified yoga teacher and otter Martha Nelson for meditations around the wheel as you make Yoga Bowls, in which we will do some breathing meditation at the wheel, talk about connections between yoga and pottery and make bowl forms. M,T 9-11:30AM, $5 Small Clay Pitchers: Wendy Sheppard teaches basic wheel throwing technique, focusing on the thrown cylinder form, trimming technique and handling, creating a small pitcher you will treasure all year! T 9-11AM, $5 Where the Wild Things Are Clay Masks! This course is inspired by Maurice Sendak’s; Where the Wild Things Are. We will have an opportunity to express our vision in a variety of ways. Students will learn making animal and human forms from basic hand building techniques, such as coil pots, pinch pots and slab mold. T 2-4:30PM $10 Berry Bowls and Plates! Ian Copeland and Marsh Hester will meet you at the Potter’s wheel for a class in the basic colander bowl and plate set, taking you through each step from start to finish just as the raspberries start to ripen! Join us out on the Potters Porch. M, T 2-4PM, $10 Clay Impressionist Plates! Mary Hunnicutt teaches this clay class which utilizes elements of design to create beautiful impressionist scenes on plates, with underglazes on clay. M,T 2-4:30PM, $10 Stoneware Pocket Crosses: Remember your time at Montreat with this meaningful cross you will create from stoneware clay. Great for youth groups. M or T, 3-5PM, $5 Small Clay Animals: Perfect for the terrarium or garden, these small animals will fit anywhere! This is something you may create in 2 hours, if this is the only time you have to try your hand in clay! W, 10-12AM, $2 Monday Evening Film Series: “Picasso and Braque Go To the Movies,” Martin Scorsese’s film about Picasso, Braque, Cubism and Early Cinema: art and technology meet as cinematography. 6:30-8PM, Lower Left Bank, Free.
