CLASSMATE ARTIE SHANKLE HONORED Artie Shankle graduated from Silsbee High School in 1976. While at Silsbee, Artie was a very diversified athlete having won letters in four sports. His senior year he was a captain on both the football and basketball teams. Wearing jersey no. 40, Shankle, lettered in football all four years of high school. He was an All-District slotback his sophomore, junior and senior years. In addition to playing slotback, he also played free safety and was a kickoff return man. He also lettered four years in basketball in his weak post position. He was awarded All-District honors his sophomore, junior and senior year. In addition he was named All-Regional and second team All-State his senior year. In 1974-76, he was a letterman on the SHS baseball team as an outfielder. His senior year. he batted .400 and was chosen for All-District. He was also a member of the track team his senior year. Shankle acccepted a football scholarship to McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA. He was a top running back for the Cowboys from 1976-79, leading the team in rushing three of those seasons. He was ranked as the ninth leading all-time McNeese rusher with 3,143 yards on 483 carries, an average 4.5 yards per rush. Shankle was the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1979 when he ran for 938 yards and eight touchdowns during the Cowboys season. In 1978, he led the team in rushing for the second straight year; netting 727 yards on 140 carries for a 5.2 average per carry and scored 10 TDs. The same year, he was named Southland conference Player of the Week for his 139 yards and two touchdowns on only 14 carries against NE Louisiana. In the 1979 Independence Bowl against Syracuse University, he was McNeese’s leading rusher with 85 yards on 16 carries. He eventually played in two Independence Bowl games. Among his top individual performances was a 139 yard rushing game against Tennessee-Chatanooga in 1979, and a 139-yard total against Nicholls State in 1978, which included five touchdowns. Shankle was twice named McNeese’s outstanding offensive player, was named to the All-Louisiana team, he was a three time All-Southland Conference Team and was an Honorable Mention All-American. In 1980, he played for the San Diego Chargers in the NFL, and Calgary Stampeeders in the CFL. Shankle resides in Silsbee with his wife Shirley. They are the parents of 11 children.
