CLAY COUNTY – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is advising motorists that effective immediately a weight limit restriction of three tons has been placed on the State Road 46 (S.R. 46) Bridge over Birch Creek, one mile west of State Road 59 (S.R. 59). Based upon a recent inspection of the bridge, INDOT has determined that vehicles weighing over three tons are not allowed to travel on this bridge. Signs displaying “Weight Limit 3 Tons” are posted on both sides of the bridge and at the intersections of State Road 59 and S.R. 46, State Road 159 and S.R. 46, and at I-70 and State Road 46. The pony truss bridge was originally built in 1932. INDOT is working to accelerate construction such that weight limits could be increased. This bridge is already in INDOT’s capital program as a replacement contract and is scheduled for bids in August of 2014. INDOT reminds motorist to use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone.
