*CLEAN WATER FOR THE PHILIPPINES* Water Ambassadors Canada is raising funds to send much needed water chlorination systems to The Philippines. Super Typhoon Haiyan cut a huge swath of destruction through parts of the islands on November 7, 2013. Clean water is both an immediate and ongoing need. In cooperation with its US partners, WaterStep in Louisville KY, both organizations are teaming up to send as many emergency chlorination systems as possible. The WaterStep M-100 chlorinator is an award winning unit. It was designed by WaterStep in cooperation with General Electric and The Louisville Water Commission. It is about the size of a football. Using a 12 v battery (or solar panel) and a handful of table salt it can clean up to 40 000 litres (10 000 gallons) of water per day. A byproduct of the process is chlorine bleach which can be used to sterilize water containers and other items. Water Ambassadors Canada has installed scores of these systems in Central America, Haiti and Central Africa. We have contacted Canadian charities on the ground in the Philippines. Water Ambassadors and WaterStep will ask North American donors to help cover the costs of the systems. We are investigating complimentary shipping. The relief agencies there will be trained how to use the units to take back to their working areas. The systems will be a source of clean water long after the crisis has abated. A full system consists of a chlorinator, plumbing, solar panel, hand pump, re-usable pre-filter and 500 gallon bladder tank. Each system can produce enough water for thousands of people daily. This same technology was used very effectively in Haiti. The full system costs $3600. We are asking Canadians to step up again to help in this desperate situation to give clean water.
