CLOSE WATCH © Mike Lee I’ve been accused of being insane, but why should it matter? I will take the blame - it does not - because I do not care. I am the watcher. I watch everything and watch everyone; some people wonder and some ask me why. I do not know. Perhaps it’s my job – my weird avocation – but who does it harm? No one, that’s who. I have people watch me and question my motive. Some ask me questions like, “What are you doing?” And when I say “Watching” they just move away. I have those, I’m sure, who think I am off. Some think I am weird, but some do not care and they are my favorite because they are weird too. But then I think ‘Why, why do people care? More people in life are crazier than I. They just do not know it, but hey – yeah – I do!’ “Why is that?” you say. Because I’m the watcher and it is my way to live life unique and not live like you. I watch things and people and places and times. I watch colors, sounds and – right now – a mime who seems to be nuts, more so than I do, but people enjoy him yet they look at me as though I am crazy. He’s crazier than I. He watches nothing, but I watch them all and have in my memory more things than they know; memories of things and people and places that I’ve been aware of and watched quite a lot. I kept a record, no not pen and paper, but deep in my mind where it will not end at least till I do. And when? When will my watching days come to an end? When I join with those who’ve gone on ahead – the crazies, the weird ones – who were just like me. We’re watchers and we’re family.
