CLUB NEWSLETTER - 21st AUGUST SENIOR REPORT - SAT 17th AUGUST In the weekend we saw our two top Restricted Teams go head to head in their final round robin game. The first 10 minutes of the game saw each team attack from all areas of the field, Bombers backs slipping through at first but couldn’t finish. But it was the Raiders that scored first with Ryan Lee charging down Bombers fullback Pete Shaw’s kick to score. It was the Raiders that applied most of the pressure in the first half with former Super 12 Player Todd Feather’s perfect goal kicking pushing the raiders to a 10-3 lead. In the second half the Bombers came out firing with Scott Thomson guiding his team around with some accurate kicking and organisation but it was the Raiders that came out on top winning 16-6. The win adds to the Raiders unbeaten winning streak of 50 games in a row and sees them go unbeaten in the Cup Round Robin. It’s not over for the Bombers as they get another chance this week when both teams play for what really matters, The Restricted 85kgs Championship Cup Final held this week at College Rifles, kicking off at 2.45pm. Come down and support these two great teams battle it out for the Champions of 2013, a repeat of the 2012 Final. Our First Grade sneak into the championship final against Teachers Eastern after pipping Marist and Ponsonby in points differential to place second. Yes that’s right another final for College Rifles Rugby!!! They needed a bonus point win against Manukau to have any chance of a final and so they did, demolishing Manukau to secure a final for the second year running. First Grade will now travel to Orakei Domain to take on Teachers Eastern with the final kicking off at 2.45pm. Get down and support our Grenades and cheer them on in what could be 3 Championship Cups for the Club in 2013. CROCS again sealed another draw and will be travelling out west to play Suburbs this weekend. COLLEGE RIFLES CUP Auckland Grammar and Kings College 2A sides played in our annual game which first started 10 years ago. In front of a huge crowd both teams put on a great game of running rugby under lights where the lead changed several times until Auckland Grammar scored and sealed the game with 2 minutes to go. Auckland Grammar won the game 22-16 and the cup will return to the schools cabinet after Kings have held it since 2008. Thank you to the College Rifles Old Boys for sponsoring this annual fixture and it’s always great to see some of our past junior players returning to our club playing for these two schools. WORLD CLUB SEVENS IN TWICKENHAM Great to see our players Orene Aii, Jeremy Innes and Russell Dobbie on the international scene playing for Auckland where they were hard done by in the Cup Final. The Auckland Sevens team finished runners-up at the inaugural World Club Sevens at Twickenham. Auckland drew the ACT Brumbies in the final, and despite having beaten them in pool play, the Australian’s were too strong in the final, winning 17-14. Congratulations to our very own Edwin Cocker who coached the side along with former Blues player Waisake Sototu.
