CLUB NOTES 1/12/14 Our six game weekend schedule resulted in three victories and three defeats. Our Under 14s saw off the challenge of Limerick FC to advance in the Goodison Cup while our Under 13s recorded a notable league win against the same club. Meanwhile, our 11B’s notched their first league win at home to Parkville FC. Junior Div 1A League: Kilmallock Utd 5 Caherdavin Celtic 1 The scoreline suggests a comfortable win for the hosts. The fact is that title chasing Kilmallock had to work very hard for this victory, three late strikes embellishing the scoreline. Kilmallock struck early, a long range effort sailing past stand-in keeper Paul Bateman (regular netminder Mark Linnane was forced to sit this one out). Aaron Costello came close with a fine headed effort. One became two on the hour but we pulled one back almost immediately. Brian Shorten showing commendable bravery to head into the net. We were well in it after this until we slackened near the end allowing the south Limerick boys in for a flurry of goals that gave the scoreboard a decidedly flattering look. Gary Bateman, Pa Sheehan, Brian Shorten were all prominent along with Evan Egan who was making his debut in Junior ranks. Schoolboy Soccer: U15 League Div 1: Caherdavin Celtic 0 Regional Utd 2 We can’t really quibble with the result here as the visitors had simply too much quality. Indeed the winning margin could have been greater but for the brilliance of keeper, David O’Byrne. Bryan McGann was at the end of a free kick to give Regional the lead fifteen minutes in. The Brian O’Callaghan coached side struck again seven minute before the break, the impressive Prince Egbunam setting up Adam Galvin for an emphatic strike. Callum Walters was buzzing in midfield in the opening half. Unfortunately, we came up against a teak tough defence with plenty of pace. Jamie Stickle who was one of our best performers on the day and came closest midway through the second half. There was plenty of effort all round but we can’t argue with the outcome, painful and all as it is. Our line-up was: David O’Byrne, Luke Ward, Stephen O’Halloran, Cian Galvin, David Rafferty, Leroy Woodland, Jack O’Sullivan, Callum Walters, Jamie Stickle, Killian Dineen, Cian Davis Reserves: Sean Skelton, Dyon Considine, Colin Coughlan, Dyon Carey (all used) John McNamara officiated. Goodison Cup: Limerick FC 0 Caherdavin Celtic 4 What a wonderful result and well merited too for Anthony Frost, Donal O’Halloran and Co.! In this replay (the sides played an exhilarating 2-2 draw at the Greenhills first time round) we took control in the second half blitzing our opponents with four goals in a fifteen minute spell. Played in foggy conditions and in a cool temperature (6.5 deg Celsius to be precise) the first half was close and competitive but one wondered would we see any goals at all as defences were well on top. We did come close shortly before the interval, Stephen O’Halloran’s free kick from twenty yards going inches over the Limerick crossbar. The second half was only three minutes old when Stephen O’Halloran latched onto a Mark Moylan cross-field ball before firing past a stunned Limerick FC keeper. A few minutes later we doubled our lead. Referee Martin Kirby pointed to the spot as Conor O’Shaughnessy (what a season he is having) went down in the box. The keeper got a hand to Shane Harney’s penalty but couldn’t prevent it from crossing the line. It got even better as we made it 3-0 with twelve minutes played. We won a corner on the right; Shane Harney sent it over and when the ball broke it was Eoin Lynch to smash it home from six yards. The pendulum had swung inexorably our way. Our fourth and final goal came when Conor O’Shaughnessy fired low and hard to net from just inside the box after a Stephen O’Halloran corner on the left had been half-cleared by the home defence. Our team was: Kevin O’Grady, Shane Harney, Eoin Lynch, Craig Reale, Keith Dempsey, Ian Leonard, Stephen O’Halloran, Conor O’Shaughnessy, Mark Moylan, Geordan Freeman, Ben Irwin Reserve: Ben Frost (used) Our reward is a mouth-watering third round tie against Aisling Annacotty which is fixed for the Greenhills at noon next Saturday. U13 Premier League; Caherdavin Celtic 4 Limerick FC 2 In an explosive twenty minute spell this game produced no fewer than six goals. This highly rated Limerick FC side struck just a couple of minutes in through P.J. Molloy and when the same player smashed home goal number two a short time later things looked ominous. But with a goal out of mothering, poacher supreme Ben Frost, fired left-footed past a bewildered Josh Moloney to reduce the gap. Minutes later the sides were level as keeper Moloney could only look on despairingly as a back pass from a defender took an awkward bounce and rolled over the goal-line. The dynamic Conor O’Shaughnessy had initiated proceedings with one of his typical strong runs through the centre. Eoin Lynch is in a rich vein of form of late and it was he who edged us ahead firing left footed into the roof of the net. It didn’t stop there as Conor O’Shaughnessy’s rasper of a free-kick found the net via the crossbar, a vigilant Andrew Keogh spotting that the ball had crossed the line and signalling for the goal. The visitors were unlucky not to reduce the deficit hitting the butt of the right hand upright in the final minute of the half. The second half was less eventful and an evenly balanced affair. There was to be no more scoring although Conor O’Shaughnessy was only fractionally off target from a couple of free kicks. Keeper, Ronan Carew was magnificent throughout doing everything that was asked of him. Another feature of the game was the strong running of Damien Keogh down the left. The game ended 4-2 in our favour to make it two wins out of three in the League. Exciting times surely!! Our team was: Ronan Carew, Niall Barrett, Riain O’Connell, Ben Irwin, Ronan O’Dwyer, Alan Gill, Sam Hanrahan, Conor O’Shaughnessy, Mark Moylan, Eoin Lynch, Ben Frost Subs used: Damien Keogh, Louis Cunneen, Darragh Shine, Killian Ryan and Guillermo Bello Our two Under 11 sides had contrasting fortunes: U11 Premier League: Fairview Rgs 3 Caherdavin Celtic 1 Our 11’A’s, despite going under to the tune of three goals to one, put up a great show and it’s only a matter of time before they hit the jackpot. We conceded an early goal and fell further behind in the second half. Thomas Cusack pulled one back following an assist by Colm Lenihan and we enjoyed a very good spell, however, the equaliser proved elusive and the home side netted a third late on from a free kick. James Linnane, Andrew Faulkner, Jake Leahy, Jack Fahy and Wayne Kearns were all to the fore. U11 Div 2 League: Caherdavin Celtic 4 Parkville FC 1 Congratulations to our 11’B’s who recorded their first win of the season at the Greenhills on Saturday morning. We were short a few regulars but still performed well hitting three first half goals. Conor Buckley shot from outside the box to make it 1-0 and then Brandon Kelly netted with a marvellous angled drive from the left. Stephen O’Donnell struck just before the break to leave us sitting pretty and the same player accounted for our fourth late in the game. Parkville were rewarded with a late consolation goal on a day when Niall Morgan’s charges at last came good. The lads’ previous best result as a 2-2 draw away to a strong Mungret Regional side.
