Tolman, President Massachusetts AFL-CIO Jos Williams, President DC Metro CLC Nancy Wohlforth, Representing California State AFL-CIO The Labor Campaign for Single Payer will convene a National Strategy Conference August 22-24 at the historic ILWU Local 6 Hall in Oakland, California. The theme of this years conference will be Organizing for Healthcare Justice in the Age of Obamacare. This will be our first conference on the West Coast and we will have an opportunity to connect with inspiring labor-supported state single payer movements in California, Oregon and Washington and we will hear from our many of our California-based labor affiliates in Labor United for Universal Healthcare, National Nurses United, International Longshore and Warehouse Union, California School Employees Association, California Federation of Teachers and dozens of local unions and Central Labor Councils. The meeting will overlap with the meetings of Healthcare NOW! and the One Payer States group. This will provide an exceptional opportunity for cross-fertilization with key allies. Participants will have the option of attending all three conferences and there will be joint plenaries, keynote speakers and a Saturday night reception. The Conference will convene at 7 PM on Friday, August 22 and adjourn no later than 12 noon on Sunday, August 24. There will be a joint plenary Saturday afternoon August 23 with Healthcare NOW and One-Payer States and a reception that evening at the California Nurses Association in downtown Oakland. Attendees are welcome to arrive early for the One-Payer States meeting on Friday afternoon and stay through the Healthcare-NOW! Annual Meeting on Sunday afternoon. A full conference schedule will be published shortly. ILWU Local 6 is located at 99 Hegenberger Road near the Oakland Airport. Ample parking is available. A limited block of rooms has been reserved at a special rate of $129 per night at the Oakland Airport Hilton, one block from the ILWU Hall. The Hilton provides free shuttle service to and from the Oakland Airport and the Coliseum BART Station. Hotel reservations can be made here or by calling 1-800-HILTONS (445-8667) and using booking code SPC. There is a $75 registration fee that includes lunch on Saturday and transportation to and from downtown Oakland on Saturday evening. The registration fee will cover admittance to all events and activities of all three groups over the weekend. Scholarships are available (contact Mark Dudzic to arrange for one). This is a time of intense ferment and opportunity for the healthcare justice movement.
