CM #Gogoi urges Karbi leaders to drop Demand. #GUWAHATI, Aug 11 – Chief Minister #TarunGogoi today appealed to the leaders of the Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS), a conglomeration of 16 democratic organisations of Karbi Anglong, not to press for further division of the State. “As a family we must remain united,” the Chief Minister told the JACAS leaders at a discussion on the autonomous state issue this morning at his Koinadhara official residence here. Disclosing this, Bharat Chandra Narah, Press Advisor to the Chief Minister, told this newspaper that the Chief Minister assured the Karbi leaders that he would place their demand for an autonomous state, comprising the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, before Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The State Government can play the role of a facilitator only on issues of creation of separate states and the final decision in this connection rests with the Central Government. On the issue of release of the arrested JACAS leaders and activists, the Chief Minister told the JACAS delegation that it would be impossible to release anyone found involved in violent activities. However, those involved in democratic and peaceful activities would not be arrested, he said. The Chief Minister left for New Delhi today after talking to the Karbi leaders, Narah said. JACAS finance secretary Kurusar Timung told this newspaper that the JACAS demanded immediate steps to hold tripartite talks involving the Central and State Governments and the JACAS. The Chief Minister accepted this JACAS demand, but maintained that the talks could be held after August 15. The JACAS leaders agreed to this assertion of the Chief Minister. via: #AssamTribuneOnline
