On May 28, soldiers from the Libyan army began bombarding neighbourhoods in the country’s second biggest city, Benghazi. They were targeting the bases of two armed Islamic groups: the 17 February Brigade and Ansar al-Sharia. Since then, fighting has spread across the city. The military operation has been baptised ‘Dignity’. The dissident general Khalifa Haftar has been leading it since May 16 – after several army units rallied to his side - without the backing of the Libyan government. Since last Wednesday, aerial bombardments have been carried out across suburban areas of the city such as al-Houwary and Sidi Frej. These two areas are known for hosting the aforementioned radical groups.
