COALDALES RUSSIAN CITIZENS CLUB CELEBRATES OVER 100 YEARS WITH A BIG CELEBRATION SATURDAY NIGHT. Click LIKE if you can name at least 2 social clubs that once existed in your coal region town. Decades ago, social clubs were well established in the coal region. Polish American Club, Lithuanian Club, Ukrainian Club, Italian Club, Russian Club--those are just a few of the ethnic clubs that often had ties to local churches. You also had service-related clubs-American Legion, Amvets, & VFW posts. Many of those clubs have folded because of declining membership. Coaldales Russian Citizens Club is among the survivors. The Russian Citizens Club has a proud heritage. It was founded on March 19, 1913 & incorporated on July 2, 1913. Dues that year were $2. The present site (picture below was taken in 1995) was built in the 1950s & is the 3rd location for the club. All have been on 1st Street. The club has always been affiliated with St. Marys Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church which was founded in the summer of 1909. At 1 time the Russian Club had over 800 members. Today, there are less than 150. The club was going to close its doors forever on New Years Eve, but it will now stay open through 2015. The club had its share of championship softball, dart, & shuffle alley teams down through the years & the club has dozens of plaques & over 70 trophies. Its been said the Russian Club organized the 1st ever golf tourney in the Panther Valley back in the mid 50s at Indian Mountain. Lots of memories groing up in Coaldale at the Russian Club. Music with the King Brothers polka band, January 13th Russian New Years Eve celebrations, & gatherings after church on Sundays. We hope to rekindle many memories & chat with folks we have not seen in decades Saturday night from 7-10pm at the Russian Club in Coaldale. Coal Region Connections is proud to salute the founders, officers, & members of the Russian Citizens Club for over 100 years of continuous, distinguished service to the Panther Valley. Hope you have a great turnout for your birthday bash Saturday night!
