COASTAL DEVELOPMENT PRESSURE – A COMMON PROBLEM: While were waiting for the Queenscliffe Council to advise of its intentions with Lonsdale Reserve its relevant to look at whats happening at Bells Beach. The recent master-planning of Bells has been open and well-structured with numerous opportunities for people to provide feedback to the Surf Coast Shire via a Taskforce chaired by ex-Deputy Premier, John Thwaites. 7,000 people were reached via two community engagement phases. The Talking Bells process enabled people to submit ideas and comments which people then voted on. Not surprisingly (just like the Lonsdale and Queenscliff Reserves community response), most of the responses centred around a less is more conservationist vision. Whatever the outcome, its remarkable the extent to which the Surf Coast Shire has engaged with, and listened to, local groups to help develop an agreed plan. Food for thought for our own council (maybe!). More available at oursay.org/surfcoast/bells or surfrider.org.au/campaign/bells-beach-surf-coast-vic or savebellsbeach/?page_id=2
