COEASU ON STRIKE- VIA TRIBUNE.COM The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), has on Monday, began a seven-day sensitisation and mobilisation strike nation- wide. The warning strike which is an indication that all Colleges of Education academic activities would be paralysed for the period, was a preparatory to an industrial action should government failed to address what the union called persistence “in it’s insensitivity to the challenges of the entire education sector and the demands of the union.” The Federal College of Education, Okene branch Chairman, Mr Isa Yunusa, told newsmen that the strike was to bemoan the state of education sector, besides their demands which include the attendant implication of government’s refusal to come to terms with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)” on students and the entire education sector, particularly colleges of education which have been the most neglected of the higher education institutions.” Among the demands according to him, is the Federal Government’s encroachment on the core mandate of TETfund, “and the deliberate attempt to cripple its hitherto efficiency and effectiveness by the non-release of the 2013 intervention and the refusal to appoint a substantive executive secretary for it.” The union would go on strike because of the determination to impose on the colleges of education “ with impunity the obnoxious policy of Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System (IPPIS.” According to him, the union’s grouse was based on the “non provision of critical infrastructure required for effective teaching, learning and the deliberate obscurity in the process of the award of the contract of the controversial multi-media micro- teaching laboratory in the colleges of education” Yunusa informed that non payment of death benefits accruable from Group Life Insurance policy which he said, was a direct consequence of the centralisation of the policy by the Federal Government are among their demands. He, however, appealed with members nationwide to take the warning strike seriously by abiding with it strictly.
