COLD HEARTS “…Helped make the Vampire trend something cool…” “…Even your sworn enemy can sometimes be your friend…” This one hails from way back in 1999 by Director and friend Robert A. Masciantonio – a timely review as it is the films 15 year anniversary and gets a repeat screening at the upcoming Cinedelphia Film Festival April 10-26, 2014. This was a popular feature when it was first released, doing well on the film festival circuit and winning the accolade of Best Feature Film for 1999 in the Atlantic City Film Festival. In a similar vein to The Lost Boys, but without the same notoriety, this one helped make Vampires “cool”. Aided greatly by the acting and casting of Marisa Ryan who plays Viktoria, this one was… Smoking. Rebellious. Deviant. Black jacket and shades puffing gently on a cigarette – it was ok to hang-out with some less than trendy sidekicks…one with an eating disorder, one gay…who cares, you’re a vampire right? And so are they. But Charles “Chuck” is one annoying S.O.B. – with his own clan of vampires and being Viktoria’s “ex”, he is out to prove a point and make life a misery for her and her friends. Yet they have one thing in common… The need to feed. One sect quiet and unassuming. They blend in as best they can – Cronin and Spear, two ambulance drivers on the take give them all the life blood they need. “Hook me up” – yet they still have the nerve to sell “bum deals”. The other sect bold and blatant – thugs who feed off live prey – a water park – the waterslide turns red, lovers kissing in a raft ring drained… “Last season they made such a killing”… The lifeguard sure as hell didn’t do his job. A dark clothed stranger, an unspoken word, an act of defiance and the balance is upset making a feud that can only be solved by way of confrontation. Yet the stranger known as Seth has a secret that he holds close along with an attraction for Viktoria. “You have a cold hand…well yeah, I’m dead”. “We’ve all got Cold Heart’s…just keep warm” And a friend does just that, blistered, burnt and vaporised in the day’s full sun. I was born under a bad sign – if it wasn’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all sings Albert King. Confrontation in the full moon on the beach and we learn the secrets that have been teasing us all along by way of casual word drop or irony. Time to tell who is who and the trueness of friendship and attraction that goes way beyond the battle at hand. A heart ripped and torn. This bond must stand the test of time. But can it be sustained? If one rescues the other. For eternity. A flood of Vampire’s now on the market in every way, shape and form. This was the beginning of that cool but now in many ways “been there done that trend”. Not gory by any means, this is first hand from the Vampires perspective, a way to survive, to fit in, to exist and to create bonds that last beyond a lifetime. A rebellious love story of a kind, especially so when one knows the true extent of that relationship. Take yourself back to 1999 and enjoy it for what it provided “back in the day” as viewers will have the chance to do very soon at Cinedelphia 2014. “…Eternity Rites…” “Scratchy” Pete Retrospective April 2014 Trailer: https://youtube/watch?v=G8XNoxjJwpw
