COLETTE MILLAR by Amy Morris ‘I never consider a painting finished until I reach a point of love for the piece’, vows LA artist Colette Miller, whose psychedelic creativity is inspired by ‘my heart, dreams, philosophies, memories, psychic or intuitive forces and colour and movement’. Free-spirited Miller dips her artistic toes into plenty of creative pools; a socially conscious filmmaker and musician, she is making independent documentaries in Burkina Faso on the water shortage and in Kenya on corruption, while always finding time for her band DayGlo Aborigines. But the project requiring most of her focus is Angel Wings, an interactive street art exhibition that has traveled from downtown LA in 2012 to as far afield as Washington DC, Melbourne and Nairobi. The basic concept is to remind the world that all people have inherent ‘good’ within them, and to illustrate this Miller turns us all into angels by photographing people ‘wearing’ her deliriously colourful purply-blue wing paintings. She initially launched the enterprise by marking LA spaces with graffiti wings, enabling passers-by to stand in front of them and capture themselves on camera as an angelic creature. She swiftly gained permission and encouragement from the city’s mayor, who agreed that the colourful installations made previously dangerous areas feel brighter, even safer. Millar’s lush, optimistic and heavenly al fresco works are testament to the power of colour and art to breathe life into a space. ‘I believe good art tends to invoke a type of meditation or mind travel,’ says Miller, a belief wholeheartedly applauded and shared by the Spinocchia Freund design team.
