COLLABORATIVE ART PROJECT OPPORTUNITY: I am short one artist Saturday for a collaborative project. That is, I will get it started, hopefully with help, and customers will join in and paint with us. All participants will sign. When we have the help of customers, we will serve more as facilitators, so this project is most suitable for people who love teaching in this kind of situation. WHEN AND WHERE: I am going in to Planet Pops (on 12th Street next to SoYoung Salon and across the street from the old main post office) as soon after 8 as I can get there Saturday morning. The owner will have someone there to let me in. I am going to sketch out a couple of big things on the two small walls (rather than one long wall I thought we would be painting. Planet Pops is where I painted two old church pews just before the first Art Walk in March, and where I engaged the help of young customers. Check out Drew sitting on the right bench below. PREP: The owner is going to prep the wall beforehand by sanding or priming, as it is currently painted with a glossy paint. (Glad I went and looked at it.) Ill have the scaffold I built with me so we dont have to bend down too far to get to our brushes, paint, and water. THEMES: He approved our doing more fun themes because we will be painting both sides of the room between the long brick wall hall and the bathroom. Given the location, he approved our use of humor and cartoony themes. FOCAL POINTS: Planets, space, space ships, whatever could conceivably be in space, maybe even an alien eating a popsicle. On one side the focal point will be a bounding planet with rings like a slinky showing the movement, and the other side the planets will all be colorful popsicles, some with rings so people get that they are planet popsicles! COLLABORATION: Who would like to paint with me and facilitate customer involvement? We have one day to do both walls. AREA: We will be painting an area about 35 square feet on each side, total of about 70 square feet, roughly (Im relying on memory) 42 high by 8-10 long each. WHAT TO BRING: Nothing except you in paint-ready clothing. NEED FOR SPEED: WE WILL HAVE TO PAINT FAST!!!! I can, can you? This will be a great exercise for accomplished artists who want to speed up their painting!) PAYOFF: Publicity. Planet Pops has a lot of regulars, including several groups, one of which brings 60 people in at once. All participants will sign the walls, but artists who help from start to finish will be promoted directly by name and indirectly every time the Planet Pops collaborative projects or local collaborative arts projects in general are mentioned.
