COLLEGE OF AFRICAN WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT, MWEKA 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE COLLEGE OF AFRICAN WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT, MWEKA CONFERENCE ON WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AND WILDLIFE TOURISM IN THE CHANGING WORLD Dear alumni, current and retired faculty, government officials, NGOs, CBOs, college partners and all interested stakeholders. It is with great enthusiasm that I write to invite you to partake in initiatives associated with a 2013 historic milestone, the 50th anniversary of the College of African Wildlife Management. On 24th June 1963 formal training of wildlife managers began when the college opened its doors to 25 wildlife managers from Tanganyika, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon and Zambia. To date over 5000 wildlife managers from over 52 countries worldwide (28 African and 24 other countries) have been trained at Mweka. The majority are now working in protected areas throughout sub-Saharan Africa. As part of our celebrations, the 50th anniversary organizing committee wishes to bring together wildlife managers, lecturers, consultants, researchers and other community partners from all over the world for three – day conference to be held from 29th to 31st October 2013 at the College of African Wildlife Management in Kilimanjaro region. Conference theme Wildlife management and wildlife tourism in the changing world: Fifty years of wildlife management training in Africa Conference sub - themes • Wildlife management training in Africa: Challenges and prospects • Community based natural resources management: wildlife rights, benefits and community responsibility • Human- wildlife conflicts: critical solutions • Wildlife management: information, challenges and prospects • Wildlife law enforcement: failures or successes • Wildlife management contemporary issues (technology, HIV AIDS, gender, climate change, bush meat trade, poverty) • Wildlife governance: challenges and solutions • Wildlife management and tourism The call for oral presentations is open from 15th July 2013 to 30th August 2013. Please send an abstract for the full paper with proposed relevant sub theme, title and author list with institutional affiliations. Abstracts should be not more than 300 words. Send your abstract for registration before 30th August to the rector at [email protected]. Abstracts will be reviewed by Research and Consultancy team at the college to confirm relevancy of the contents. Registration and costs Limited funding is available to facilitate participation of Directors of wildlife from across African region, who submit abstracts on any of the sub-themes by due date stated above. Funds will cover conference costs including tea/coffee, lunch, transport, accommodation and stationeries. Nonetheless costs for lunch and tea/coffee for all participants during conference breaks will be covered by the college. However other participants are requested to be prepared to pay for their travel, accommodation and dinner or request their institutions to assist on the same. Those who wish to attend without presenting papers are also welcome and should register by sending an e mail to the rector at [email protected]. The college will assist participants in making all arrangements for hotels` reservations if required. Conference Venue Since the conference pivots around 50th year’s anniversary of the College concept, we will use Major Kinloch`s hall at MWEKA college campus as the conference room. Access to the College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka Mweka campus is located 15 kilometres north of Moshi town. There are a series of good hotels in Moshi for accommodation and participants can drive to and from the conference on daily basis.
