COLONIAL ADMINISTRATION IN NIGERIA. The very first european contact in Nigeria was 1472. Between then and 1885 a lot of europeans such as MUGUL PARK,LANDER BROTHER,these people contact Nigeria for one expenditure and to discover new world. By 1885 there was a confererence in berlin in Germany where representatives of all colonial power met to scrable and partition Africa. At the end of this conference, britain secure the right to control the whole of the Niger delta. By 31st Dec. 1899 the british government revoked the charta that empower Royal Niger Company(This company involve in trading from UK between 1885 to 1899). On this day Jan 1st 1900 the flag of the Royal Niger Company was lowered and british flag was hoisted. Immediately the british government take over the Niger delta in totality. They divided the area into 3 for easy administration. (1) The protectorate of Northern part of the Niger delta (2) The protectorate of the southern part of the Niger delta (3) The colony of lagos. Sir Fredrick Lugard was appointed british high commissioner for the northern protectorate of the Niger delta. By 1906 the very first amalgamation came up,when the colony of lagos was amalgamated with the protectorate of the sonthern part of the Niger delta to become the colony and protectorate of the southern part of the Niger delta. By 1914 british government realized the duplicity in process of administration of 2 protectorate,they decided to merge the 2 protectorate to become 1 by the 2nd amalgamation. This become the most prominent amalgamation in the history of Nigeria. At the period of the 2nd amalgamation it became incumbent for the administration to faction out a name by which the 2 protectorate shall be called. A lot of consulyayion were made and we learnt in history that a woman by name FLORA SHAW,who was enjoying an affinity with Lord Lugard suggested the name from Niger delta to become NIGERIA without considering any spiritual or social identity with the whole country. Ever since the name NIGERIA has come to stay. Lord lugard ruled between 1914 and 1919. The 1st world war broke out in 1919 and a new governor was senr to NIGERIA by name Sir Hugh clifford...........
