COLORADO TRANSPORT ---- Colorado Transport process and answers for those who don’t know or don’t know who to ask. (( I, Heather Gould... have altered a comment made by Michelle Davis Sanders in an effort to put an end to rumors Ive heard regarding what she has started with the help of many people including Guardians Rescue)) Here is the process: 1. Dog is behavior-tested and deemed OK to be adopted in Colorado. Basically, can the dog go to a dog park without attacking another dog or person? This is done in person and by speaking to staff at AC and have had experience with the dog. 3. Dog is SAFE from euthanasia - let me be very clear, OUR PULLED DOGS WILL NOT DIE AT ANIMAL CONTROL, THEY ARE SAFE! 4. Dog has to be vetted/spayed/vaccinated PRIOR to leaving AC. AC is backed up right now, and ADOPTERS get priority over rescue. It just is what it is. 5. While the dog waits to be released, I (Michelle Sanders) scramble to find a temporary TX foster. This can be difficult to find sometimes! (Most times we are talking 2 weeks MAXIMUM for foster but finding someone to step up is sometimes hard.) Dr. Draper will then send me a note that says, come get “insert dogs name”, and I have to have somewhere to put the dog. 6. Then Kelly ODonnell Layton (for those of you unaware this is the contact in Colorado) and I scramble to find a flexible CO foster that can be available at a to-be-determined date. We also work on finding a forever home, which is obviously our ultimate goal! We also have people that are conducting home visits pre-adoption. (Volcom alone has had 30 applications!!!) 7. Pulled dogs have to be in foster care in TX for 7 days prior to transport to heal from surgery and to get a good idea of personality to help in home placement. 8. Transport leaves every 2 weeks FROM HOUSTON. 9. $75 is required for transport, as well as a volunteer to meet the transport in Houston. The transport leaves from Houston and goes directly to Denver. 10. Dog has to have proof of vaccines, has to be wormed, flea and tick free, mange-free, Heartworm checked, microchipped, temporary collar, to-go bag with food for 1 week, toys/bones for transport, and has to have current health certificate to cross state line. If HW+ a treatment plan must be mapped out for adopter to accept and follow. I hope you can now understand the process through which we are working tirelessly to get these dogs to their forever homes in CO. Please message me (Michelle Davis Sanders) privately if you have any questions or concerns or you want to give a BIG THANKS to the people I mentioned above who are working like crazy to get this project launched. It takes a village, and I am transparent with our finances and our mission. Please dont hesitate to reach out. Oh - and thank you to Christina Davis and Cory Franks Houdmann who both generously donated food, toys, blankets, and treats. My last addition is to mention that this all started out as a 1-2 a month to Summit County, Colorado. However, with everyone wanting to donate and save certain furbabies it became so much bigger and FAST! This left Michelle scrambling and my goodness did these people do an AMAZING job in delivering for these babies! NONE of these dogs are ending up euthanized (as one rumor suggested) and out of the 11 sent on the 8/28 transport 2 adoptions have already been finalized! Michelle is working relentlessly to get these babies SAFE and in GREAT homes! She is in no way shipping dogs off without a care. In fact, this amazing lady is keeping meticulous records and has signed agreements to help in making sure these babies she sends NEVER get euthanized. She has even been contacted by several rescues in Colorado asking what she’s doing, how they can help, and have offered to take in some that she needs help finding homes for! When I say she is being meticulous and detail oriented I am sooo not kidding. I ask everyone to be patient and supportive of Michelle in this endeavor. She is an AMAZING person whom I’ve come to adore. Im sorry this is long, but I have heard a few rumors and remarks, hopefully this answers questions and eases minds of people wanting to donate :)
