COLUMBIA – Today, State Superintendent of Education Dr. Mick Zais congratulated five South Carolina schools for winning the prestigious National Blue Ribbon award from the U.S. Department of Education. Royall Elementary School in Florence School District One is among five South Carolina schools named National Blue Ribbon Award winners. “These five schools across our state are models of academic excellence and should be celebrated for this achievement,” said Zais. “They prove every day that zip codes should not affect a student’s destiny. Full credit goes to the students, teachers, parents, and administrators in these communities. They should be very proud of this accomplishment, as it will always be a part of their school’s history,” concluded Zais. A total of 337 schools are being recognized nationwide for overall academic excellence or progress made in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. The national program has recognized nearly 7,900 public and private elementary, middle, and secondary schools since 1982. This year, 50 private and 287 public, charter, choice, and magnet schools are being recognized across the nation.
