COMET TALES East Cessnock Bowling Club will have the honour of hosting an international Trans Tasman Professional Bowlers Association series between Australia and New Zealand from Monday 15th to Wednesday 17th July. The Australian team will consist of Steve Glasson, Brett Wilkie, Ben Twist, Steve Halmai and Karen Murphy and will take on the Kiwi combination of Duane White, Ken Walker, Chris Lourie, Murray Glassey and Mark Watt. ECBC will be holding a Meet and Greet Dinner on Sunday 14th July where everyone has the opportunity to come along and mingle with these superstars of our game. Tickets are $20 per head and can purchased at the club or online at [email protected] with CEO Marlene Hartog or Marketing Manager Lucia. We hope spectators take the opportunity to come along to ECBC and enjoy the experience of watching a live international match in their own backyard. All welcome. The Mens Pairs Championship Final was played on the weekend and saw Jon Dimopoulos and Michael Cronin finish a little to strong for Colin Smith and Greg Burgoyne 21-10. Scores were level up until the 13th end and then Jon and Michael showed their class to score a much deserved victory. For Michael Cronin this was his 3rd Club Championship for the year having already won the Major Singles and Mens Fours. It now remains to be seen if he can win the Triples and achieve the Grand Slam for the 3rd time in his decorated career. The Cessnock City Ladies Number 2 Pennant side travelled to Maitland City on Wednesday June 17th to play for the regional Pennant flag against Kotara, the Newcastle Champions. Unfortunately for Cessnock City Ladies, they ran into a very polished Kotara side and went down overall. These ladies did manage to win one of the rinks against Kotara, with Lorraine Foster, Carol Parkinson, Margaret McGuiness and Marion Crump winning their game 17-15. Well done ladies on being the Hunter District Champions. The Mens Hallam Pairs tournament is filling fast and has about 10 vacancies left, so if your interested in having a crack at the $4000 prizemoney get your team in ASAP. This popular and long running Pairs tournament will be held at ECBC on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August. The City of Cessnock Junior Academy is being outstandingly successful, and its great to see the 13 Junior Bowlers enjoying themselves so much and learning from each training session. We have organised a match against Newcastle on Friday 26th July at ECBC to be played in the 7 a side format. This will be a great experience for these Juniors and will also be good practise for Jesse Herbert and Alex Hannah who have been selected for our Zone side to contest the NSW 7 a side Championships. Well done boys, put your best foot forward for Zone 6. Thats all for this week, I hope everyone enjoys their bowls. -- Regards, Paul Wesche Bowls Manager, East Cessnock Bowling Club
