COMING THIS WEEKEND --- In Tahlequah !!! Visit the Cherokee National Holiday, and learn more of the uniquely American, highly advanced Cherokee history, culture, customs, and government. The Cherokees have a long tradition and reverence for knowledge and education. They were known to send their sons to the foremost colleges in the world --- before we were a nation. When the Cherokees were forced to relinquish their Homelands, in all or part of 8 states in the East, one of their first acts was to establish 60 schools and a university, plus a mental hospital. Another was to immediately import a printing press, for a newspaper and book publishing, like they had back home. The Cherokee Female Seminary is now the 3-campus Northeastern State University. The Cherokee Phoenix newspaper is still in operation, today --- nearly 175 years later !!! Today, MOST of Northeast Oklahoma would be OWNED by the CHEROKEE NATION --- if it had not been for the Dawes Act by Congress, taking away the rest of the Cherokee lands originally given them in Indian Territory, except for a small parcel doled out to each citizen.
