COMMON RUNNING MISTAKE #5; Deciding that because you have come ____ this far (fill in the blank) you are ready to do ___ (fill in the blank). Here the commonest of this common mistake is: Persons who have a significant amount of weight due to running, and want to push themselves into a 1/2 / full marathon domain. This usually leads to mistake #2 & #3 with a body that isnt equipped for the volume required and usually a running gait to match. The other group who is notorious for this is the Ive done a 1/2 Ironman so Im now training for a full. Ditto for above! Unfortunately, humans by nature are not patient enough to allow their body to progress into an endurance machine. It takes this patience (!), consistency, a well structured program, and achievable bench marks along the way; this will pay dividends. I have SEEN too many (and dare I say it, men) who BREAK THEMSELVES DOWN GOOD AND PROPER by delving into an endurance realm they lack the base condition for. This base condition, in itself takes T-I-M-E! One particular client I am thinking of did the lost 20+ kg and now want to run a marathon. I did a gait analysis of his running and STRONGLY advised him not to, for several reasons. I discussed the necessity of getting his gait right and getting his loading right / appropriate over time. His ego took over (we are all guilty of this). He ended up with several injuries and still isnt back running, over 1 year on. This COULD have been avoided. Needless to say, he is EXTREMELY frustrated...
