COMPASS......... The tension of the ride home had clouded something that happened this afternoon. We were in town for Alis 1st birthday party and stopped at a store on the way to the party. Waiting in line to pay for my things, I noticed a fellow Vietnam vet of the Black Horse division coming into the store. As always, as he approached and acknowledged my stature as a fellow Vietnam veteran I extended my hand in brotherhood. In the midst of our brief thank you and welcome home, the cashier, keyed the PA and announced to the store that there were two Vietnam vets on deck, yeah that sounds like something a fellow vet would say. Any way, the applause, thank yous and a distant Hooyah were not deafening, but they came from everywhere. If my brother from the Black Horse saw as much pride in my eyes as I did in his, it will be a moment to remember for a very long time. There are moments that overwhelm us but I was able to hold my emotions and tears in check until I got out the door. I only wish the two grandkids waiting in the car with grandma had been there. To all the folks who make memories such as these possible, not only for Vietnam vets, but for all vets, please accept my thanks on behalf of all who have served and those that will follow in our footsteps.
