COMPLY THEN COMPLAIN For five years, 1957 to 1962, I was a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Cadet Corps, an organization founded in 1910 as an extension of the Army Cadet Force of Great Britain—Trinidad and Tobago was still a colonial possession. The Cadet Corps would be an equivalent of the junior ROTC in the U.S. The highest rank to which a schoolboy member of the Corps could aspire was that of Sergeant Major; and this was the rank I attained. One of the fundamental principles governing the behavior of a Cadet was, “comply, then complain.”
