COMPUTERS DONATED BY MUGABE GATHER DUST BECAUSE SCHOOLS CONSTANTLY DONT HAVE ELECTRICITY Most of the computers donated under the Presidential Schools Computerisation Programme are gathering dust due to lack of skills among the teaching staff and shortage of electricity in rural schools. Only 1 533 students sat for computer exams in 2013, yet 8 300 computers were donated to schools under the programme. The number of the students who sat for the final computer examination indicates that only a few schools have put the computers to good use. The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Lazarus Dokora admitted that some of the schools which received the computers do not have teachers who are qualified to teach computer lessons. Other schools have either a broken down electricity transmitter, or have no access to electricity at all. Dokora said his ministry is making efforts to ensure that they cover the skills gap and ensure that every student has access to computers. “We are concerned about this situation and we are doing all we can to ensure that every student receives computer lessons. We cannot accept a situation where the presidential computers continue to gather dust,” he said.
