CONCERNING THE END OF THE SEASON The Valley League, in my - TopicsExpress

CONCERNING THE END OF THE SEASON The Valley League, in my opinion, has done a tremendous job keeping everyone updated this season. For example, the league website has posted this statement about the end of the season: According to the VBL Operating Policies and Procedures, the 2014 regular season will end on July 27; however, league president Donald Lemish has granted permission for make-up games to be played on July 28, provided they do not affect first- or second- place standings. The playoffs will start on July 29 and must conclude no later than August 10. League rules require that a one-game playoff be set if there is a tie for first place. July 28 is reserved for that possibility and is why the president has issued the “provision” that no make-up game involving those teams in first or second place could be played on the 28. The league tie-breaker system will be used to determine all other positions in the standings following any make-up games played on July 28. “There is no doubt in my mind that we are not going to complete the regular season schedule. We have had too many postponements already. The line has been drawn to protect the playoffs and insure that they can be completed,” said Lemish. All three rounds of the playoffs are three-game series. If each series went the maximum number of games, the playoff would end Aug. 6. However, inclement weather could extend the playoffs by as much as an additional four days. League rules state that the league must conclude play by Aug. 10. So there you have it- the regular season will finish on July 28th, with the playoffs starting the next day. Playoffs will consist of three 3-games series. The league will finish, for certain, by August 10. (And the harvests in the Shenandoah Valley should be fantastic with all the rain!) And by the way, if you’re interested, this is what the playoffs would look like if the season ended today: #8 Covington vs. #1 Front Royal #7 Aldie vs. #2 Harrisonburg #6 Strasburg vs. #3 Staunton #5 Waynesboro vs. #4 Charles Town Woodstock, Winchester, and New Market would miss the playoffs. Of course, the season isn’t ending today, so all of this will change quite a bit. For example, Staunton is 9-1 in its last 10 games, and is only 1 game behind Harrisonburg and 2 1/2 behind Front Royal. Woodstock is also rising, 7-3 in its last 10, and is only two games behind Covington and Aldie. Much can still happen! And, as usual, check in here for updates on daily scores, hitters and pitchers of each day, and updates on the playoff race!
