CONCERT REPORT! Among the treasures of Milwaukee it is KILLING me to leave is our art museum, designed by the great Santiago Calatrava and perched on our magnificent lakefront. radardesign.br/movimento/15355738_0bc2862c6e_o/ This building is equal parts sailboat and marine fowl, a marvel. I rode my bike down today to take in the FREE concert presented by the participants of Fresh Inc, the summer chamber-music performance and composition workshop project of the 5th House Ensemble (who so recently gave us our evening of Caleb Burhans’ music in Chicago). Revelations: a double-bass solo on extended techniques played so lovingly that all of us were jealous to be the instrument in that young man’s hands; a sublimely performed duet between a harpist and a soprano saxophonist; and a new piece that reminded us, via the modern flute (!), of why we love R&B guitar. But more uniquely – and you will know what I mean if you Google “Milwaukee art museum” and select “Images” (no, really: DO this…) – was the interaction between great music and great architecture. We were sitting in here: pinterest/pin/76701999873613683/ Lake Michigan stretched out before us into the horizon, and gulls arced past the windows, as the musical sounds reverberated warmly inside this secular cathedral to form, balance, light, and wonderment. “Terribilis est locus iste” (“Awesome is this place”), I had to think: the chant on which Dufay based his music for the consecration of the duomo in Florence. And I remembered what the Medieval scholars understood: that architecture is Divinely organized relationship in matter, while music is Divinely organized relationship in motion (vibration). The building and the music it contained were fitting for each other, and I deepened my appreciation for the importance of the visual aesthetics that surround us daily. Thank god – and especially nowadays – for ALL the arts, which make life desirable.
