CONDOLENCE MESSAGE FROM THE N.U.S.S EXECUTIVE (2014-2015 AC. YR.) Fellow students and countrymen, the Executive of the National Union of Sierra Leone Students (N.U.S.S) writes with a deep sense of sadness and a heavy heart as we remember our fellow students and all other Sierra Leoneans who lost their lives, loved ones and properties on this very historical date 16 years today. This date always tolls a bell for all Sierra Leoneans, albeit one of sorrow and grief as we remember the events of 6th of January 1999 in Freetown. This sad event still lingers on in the dark corridors of our minds. Students suffered the heavy blows and stings of that moment in the country. Many were killed, amputated, misused, and displaced physically, emotionally and mentally. A lot of Sierra Leoneans today are yet to recover from the trauma of the events on this date that we are commemorating. Our executive acknowledges the efforts and roles the citizens, government and International community have played in the rehabilitation of our country since that event. We believe that those efforts were inspired by love and the necessity of all forms of peace in our society. Today again as we write in commemoration, we are faced with a deadly plague, the Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) that is gnawing up the sweet fruits of recovery from the war. This is no exaggeration but the sad truth that our country, Sierra Leone, has never experienced an uninterrupted period of fifteen (15) years without a social challenge since we gained independence. One can only wonder but why! However, as we remember our fellow students and countrymen who lost their lives on this day in demonstration and strike actions against all shades of social injustices and the deadly Ebola outbreak, let us all be vigilant and forthright in the ongoing fight against the scourge and be united as a country to overcome this and other myriad hurdles in the track of national development. We call on all Sierra Leonean students to imbibe the culture of unity, peace, love, justice and freedom. We may be challenged by our differences, but at the same time, we must not lose sight of our responsibilities as the next generation of leaders in Sierra Leone. May the souls of the faithfully departed through the mercy of God/Allah rest in peace, Amen. Long live N.U.S.S! Wake up Students Unionism!!!
