CONGO FEVER IN PAKISTAN NEWS FROM SEPTEMBER Another Congo fever patient dies in Islamabad ISLAMABAD: Another person from the same family died from the Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Saturday. The deceased’s father and brother have already lost their lives to the CCHF, while, his brother, Arif, is being treated at the PIMS hospital for the same reasons. Congo fever is a tick-borne viral disease that is commonly transferred to humans from domestic animals. Its symptoms include fever, bloody urine and nose bleeding. According to doctors, all four patients belonged to a family of butchers and were residing in Abbottabad. Due to their profession, they were in close contact with animals that could have resulted in the disease. The first death from Congo fever in Pakistan was reported in 1976 in Rawalpindi when Dr Mateen died while treating a patient at the Central General Hospital (now Benazir Bhutto Hospital). A 25-year-old intern physician, Dr Farzana, also died at the Holy Family Hospital in 2002 while treating a Congo fever patient. A female patient was tested positive in February 2013. She was treated at the PIMS and later discharged after recovering from the disease. online
