CONGRATULATIONS TO AURA (THE NOMADS)! Uncle Tom Moffatt - TopicsExpress

CONGRATULATIONS TO AURA (THE NOMADS)! Uncle Tom Moffatt mentioned this morning that it was on this date in 1976 -- 16 Aug 76 -- that Aura opened for the Commodores at Conroy Bowl. I remember the show but not the date. It was the first time that I saw Vincent Vince Mendoza play with the group (he played sax before he became the groups drummer). We did a big story on the concert in the next issue of Sunbums -- the Commodores were excellent, of course, and the crowd at Conroy Bowl was into their music before Hawaii (as a Top 40 pop market) discovered them. When the Commodores returned to Hawaii they headlined Blaisdell Arena. [For everyone who doesnt know, Sunbums was Hawaiis equivalent to Rolling Stone, but free, from c. 1969 through its demise c. 1979. Founded by Paul Maddox, published for most of its existence by John F. Leonard [JFL Enterprises], Sunbums covered a tremendous amount of entertainment-related and cultural-related activities that the daily papers of the era completely ignored. Someday, with luck and a corporate grant, JFLs son, Chris Leonard, will be able to get Sunbums scanned and online for use by researchers]. Congratulations to Aura!
