CONNAUGHT GOLD CUP ROUND 1 ACHILL ROVERS 2-1 BALLYHAUNIS (AET) Although the season is less than 2 months old, this was the third meeting of the sides. Ballyhaunis took an early lead when Fergal Kelly headed home a corner kick after 5 minutes. Anthony McHugh scored on the half hour mark from Johnny Kiernan free kick. In fact Ballyhanius had the better chances in the half with debutant goalkeeper Bernard Briody making 2 good saves from Hurley. A very scrappy first half finished level. It was a similar story in the second half as each team knew the other so well. With Patrick Grealis playing well in the centre. Achill Rovers seemed to be getting the upper hand. The only clear cut chance of the half came as Kevin Lynch broke through down the right and his cross found Ronan Kilbane who directed wide from 5 yards. Ballyhauniss Conor Freeley played in Andy Cunnane whos cross was finger tipped over the head of the on rushing Kelly. Both teams started the extra time with 10 men following an incident between Sean Scott Cafferkey of Achill Rovers and Ballyhaunis goalscorer Fergal Kelly. Rovers got the breakthrough when Mark Gallagher was sent clean through and unleashed a shot which hit of the hand of a Ballyhaunis defender. Kevin Lynch converted the resulting defender. Rovers had several chances to secure the win but good defending from Michael Waldron kept the score at 2-1.
