CONSEQUENCES You hawked it as the “Affordable Care Act.” “Keep your existing plan,” you chanted. “Premiums will go down,” you regurgitated. To the contrary, I just received a letter stating, “Your health insurance plan will no longer be available after January 1, 2014.” The ACA-compliant alternative I am now being “offered” comes at a significantly higher cost compared to my current plan: --> Monthly premium: 48% higher (and that’s on top of the 49% increase in this year’s premium over 2012 attributed largely to “preparation for ACA.”). --> Deductibles: In-Network, 43% higher; Out-of-Network, 186% higher. --> Out-of-Pocket Maximums: In-Network, 25% higher; Out-of-Network, 150% higher. Compared to my current plan, the higher premium and deductibles purport to buy improved maternity care coverage (we are over 55) and slightly better outpatient chemical dependence/mental health treatment (we have no history of dependency or mental health issues). The new prescription medication formula is incomprehensible. This is not simply some “difference of opinion” or “the good fight” or “democracy in action” or any other phrase you care to invoke to assuage what has happened here. There is no hiding behind the faceless, nameless “government” either. No, this is personal--me and you. And I hold YOU accountable for the harm you have done to my family. Your actions have measurably diminished our quality of life. Lacking yourself what it takes to come into my home to try to harm my family, instead you turned to your surrogates in Washington to do it on your behalf. Moreover, you have given the government the green light to use violence against me and my family for non-compliance. If this is not what you intended through your ardent support of ACA, then you are a fool; if it is, then you are a conniver. Your injurious actions are not those of a friend or neighbor, but of a menace. And don’t you dare try to rationalize your unconscionable behavior by posting a response here or otherwise trying to contact me; unfriend me now. I no longer care to have anything to do with you.
